On the 1st October 2019, CountyClean Group’s very own Operations Director, Trevor Beer, will be setting off to Nepal to trek to the infamous Everest Base Camp at the foot of the tallest mountain in the world!
The trip is proudly sponsored by CountyClean Group. Trevor will be raising money in aid of Chestnut Tree House, which is a children’s hospice for Sussex, Brighton and South East Hampshire, as well as St Wilfrid’s Hospice, who provide specialist care for people with any progressive or advanced life-limiting illness.
Both of these charities have a great presence in the Eastbourne Community and can be donated to on Trevor’s fundraising page here.
Leading up to the Trek
In order to get him prepared for the physically as well as mentally challenging trek, Trevor has started a fitness regime which includes interval training, circuit training, walks on hilly terrain and steady work out sessions.
Long distance running is also part of his training in order to increase stamina and work on the mental ability to dig deep in preparation for the trek in high altitudes.
Trevor has been given an extensive packing list due to the variation in the climate at different levels of the climb. This includes essential hiking gear such as boots, heavy weight trekking trousers, fleeces, hats, various types of gloves and socks and waterproof jackets.
Base Camp
There are two base camps on opposite sides of Mount Everest, South Base Camp (5340m) is in Nepal and the North Base Camp (5150m) is in Tibet. These camps are used by mountain climbers during their ascent and descent to Mount Everest. Climbers typically rest at base camp for a few days to acclimatise and reduce the risks and severity of altitude sickness.
The South Base Camp trek is one of the most popular trekking routes in the Himalayas and this is the route that Trevor will be taking with his group and guides from The Bucket List Company.
Around 40,000 people per year take the trek to the Nepal Everest Base Camp, with around 800 people attempting to make the full journey to the summit of Everest (8848m).
Nepal first opened its borders to tourists in the 1950’s and thousands of people are drawn to the irresistible and iconic region every year to get a glimpse of Mount Everest.
The Journey Begins
Leaving on the 1st October and arriving back in England on the 18th, Trevor’s itinerary involves 11 days of trekking which is the perfect way to see the beauty of the Himalayas and the mountain villages, whilst hiking along some of the world’s best mountain trails.
To give a basic run down of the journey that Trevor will embark on, he will firstly start off by arriving in Kathmandu on day two of the trip after a long first day of travelling. Day three of the journey will be a free day in Kathmandu to get accustomed to the six hour time difference, as well as to soak up the culture and visit the Buddhist temples around the city.
On day four, Trevor and the group will fly from Kathmandu to Lukla (2860m) where the 130km round hike will begin. From Lukla they will trek to Phakding which will take around three hours.
Once in Phakding, the group will rest there in preparation for day 5 which involves a long day of trekking to Namche Bazaar where they will climb over 800 metres. Day six will be a rest day to acclimatise to the elevation of Namche Bazaar and also explore the local markets.
On day seven, Trevor will be saying goodbye to warmer weather as well as Wi-Fi and mobile communication as he begins his journey to Tengboche (3860m). This is said to be one of the hardest days of the trek due to the ascent.
Days eight and nine involve trekking to Dingboche (4410m) and an acclimatisation day. On day ten, the group will set off for Lobuche (4940m) and once there, they will rest ready for the last day of the ascent!
Almost There…
Day 11 will be the toughest and hardest day in order to finally make it to base camp (5340). Once the group reach base camp and have taken in all the views and the satisfaction of their achievement, they will then swiftly start their decent back to Lukla which will take three and a half days. The descent will be quicker as Trevor will not need to acclimatise.
On day 15, the group will fly back to Kathmandu and then have two free days to rest and explore. Finally on day 18 of the trip Trevor will be returning to the UK.
As Trevor gears up to make this long journey in aid of his chosen charities, Chestnut Tree House and St Wilfrid’s Hospice, we will be keeping everyone posted on his training, equipment arrivals and the actual trip across our social media platforms.
We are so excited and proud of Trevor for taking on this task for such great causes and everyone here at CountyClean Group is thrilled to be supporting him. Once again you can donate to Trevor’s chosen charities here.
Look out for updates coming soon!
